Europe swelters as heatwave breaks records and becomes 'new normal'
Europe is grappling with another record-breaking heatwave as temperatures soar across the continent. Spain has already seen June records shattered, with the mercury hitting 46 degrees Celsius in the southwest. Neighbouring Portugal is also sweltering, with Lisbon reaching 40 degrees. France has placed an unprecedented 84 out of 96 mainland regions on orange heat alert, the second-highest level. In London, Wimbledon opened to its hottest day on record, forcing organisers to implement additional player breaks.The extreme temperatures are attributed to a high-pressure zone known as a heat dome. The World Health Organization warns that such events are becoming more frequent and dangerous due to climate change. Scientists caution that scorching summers may become the new normal for Europeans, raising concerns about public health and infrastructure resilience in the face of rising temperatures.
