Weeks after the latest round of abductions in Nigeria, where armed men snatched hundreds of students from a Catholic school in Niger State, some have been released but most of them are still in captivity. The attacks have become a grim routine across parts of northern Nigeria, where jihadists and criminal gangs operate with near impunity. Now, with security forces stretched thin and trust in the state at a breaking point, some communities are taking matters into their own hands by directly negotiating with the very gangs that terrorize them.
