La ricerca ha coinvolto 54 partecipanti, divisi in tre gruppi - uno che scriveva senza alcun supporto, uno con motore di ricerca e uno con ChatGPT - impegnati a produrre saggi in stile SAT nell'arco di più sessioni. Tramite EEG, gli autori hanno rilevato che il gruppo "solo cervello" mostrava la connettività neurale più ampia e diffusa, quello con motore di ricerca un coinvolgimento intermedio, mentre il gruppo che utilizzava l'IA registrava il livello di attivazione più basso tra i tre.
Gli utenti di ChatGPT, secondo l'analisi, hanno mostrato risultati peggiori anche a livello linguistico e comportamentale, con saggi giudicati "senz'anima" da due insegnanti valutatori e con un ricorso crescente al copia-incolla nelle sessioni successive. Lo stesso Media Lab ha però invitato a evitare letture allarmistiche, chiedendo di non usare termini come "danno cerebrale" o "atrofia" per descrivere i risultati, ricordando che si tratta di un preprint non ancora sottoposto a piena revisione paritaria e circoscritto al solo contesto della scrittura di saggi.
