Nel dibattito sulla patrimoniale a Otto e Mezzo, Riccardo Staglianò ha contestato l'idea che una tassa sui grandi patrimoni sia impopolare tra gli italiani. Secondo il giornalista, diversi sondaggi mostrerebbero un ampio consenso dell'opinione pubblica verso una misura che chieda un contributo maggiore ai cittadini più facoltosi.Staglianò ha sottolineato come il vero nodo sia definire la soglia patrimoniale oltre la quale applicare l'imposta. A suo giudizio, una delle ipotesi più equilibrate sarebbe quella proposta da Oxfam Italia, che individua la soglia a 5,4 milioni di euro di patrimonio.Secondo questa impostazione, la tassa riguarderebbe circa 50 mila persone, pari allo 0,1% più ricco della popolazione italiana.
