Einen hochrangigen Hamas-Funktionär lebend festzunehmen, gilt als seltene Ausnahme im Kampf gegen die Terrororganisation. Nach Angaben aus israelischen Sicherheitskreisen soll Israel den internen Sicherheitschef der Hamas bei einer riskanten Operation in Gaza City gefangen genommen und aus dem Gazastreifen gebracht haben. Die Aktion soll am helllichten Tag erfolgt sein und außergewöhnlich präzise Geheimdienstinformationen vorausgesetzt haben. Berichten zufolge kam es während des Einsatzes zu Gefechten, die von massiven Luftangriffen begleitet worden sein sollen.
