Iran is pursuing a two-pronged strategy as tensions with the United States continue to simmer. Tehran is escalating its rhetoric against Washington, warning that American troops could be targeted anywhere in the world. A senior Iranian lawmaker has also revealed ambitions to develop missiles with a range of 6,000 kilometres, eventually hoping to extend that reach to 15,000 kilometres — potentially putting the American mainland within range. But while Iran is raising the military stakes, it is also making a significant move in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian lawmaker Amir Hayat-Moghaddam says ships from four countries — India, China, Iraq and Qatar — have been exempted from Tehran's transit restrictions. The announcement could offer relief to Indian shipping companies and seafarers, especially given India's dependence on the Strait for crude oil, gas and fertiliser supplies.
