HOW TO BECOME AN ACTOR
An actor's performance doesn't start when the director says action. A great performance can require months (even years) of hard work. In today's video, we do a deep dive into all that an actor's preparation might look like.
ACTING TIPS 101
The first step in an actor’s preparation is reading the script thoroughly. At this stage, actors work on comprehension, making sure they fully grasp what is happening in each scene. They study the dialogue, noting shifts in tone, pacing, and rhythm, while also paying attention to stage directions or scene descriptions. Memorization is also a core component here, often achieved through repeated reading, vocal exercises, or breaking the script into manageable sections.
HOW TO GET BETTER AT ACTING
Once the script is memorized, the deeper work of interpretation begins. This is where actors identify the subtext-- the hidden meaning beneath the dialogue. They ask questions such as: What does the character really want in this moment? How do their words mask or reveal their intentions?
FILM ACTING RESEARCH
Actors then turn to research, which helps ground their character in a believable reality. This might involve studying the time period, location, or cultural background that informs the world of the story. It can also mean understanding professions, lifestyles, or social contexts that shape a character’s behavior. The more informed the preparation, the more nuanced the performance becomes.
ACTORS ON ACTING PHYSICALITY
Many actors also prepare physically for roles, ensuring their bodies align with the demands of the character. This could include conditioning, movement training, or adopting habits that mirror the character’s lifestyle.
PYSCHOLOGICAL PREPARATION
Equally important is psychological work, where actors explore the mental and emotional states of their characters. They may draw upon imagination or personal reflection to connect with the character’s inner life. This stage involves using method techniques to cultivate empathy and understand motivation. By preparing psychologically, actors create performances that feel lived-in rather than performed.
HOW ACTORS PREPARE FOR A ROLE ON SET
Finally, preparation continues once filming or rehearsal begins. On set, actors adjust their performances to camera angles, blocking, and the energy of fellow performers. The key is to remain adaptable, incorporating direction while staying true to their preparation. This stage is about translating months of work into a performance that fits the collaborative environment of the production.
