What's Hiding in Your Pets' Food? The Contaminants Labels Don't Show | Greta Wire

What’s really in your pet’s food, beyond what you see on the label?

Greta talks with Sean Callen of the Clean Label Project on today's "Greta Wire" podcast about the group’s research into contaminants found in cat and dog food. Callen discusses heavy metals including lead and mercury, pesticides and why contaminants aren’t disclosed on pet-food labels the way ingredients are.

Greta gets personal about what she feeds her three cats, Bill, Nick and Jack, as Callen explains why fish-based food can present particular concerns, why expensive food isn’t necessarily cleaner and how contamination can begin with the raw ingredients themselves.

He also offers tips pet owners can use when choosing food, including rotating proteins, looking for third-party testing and asking brands to provide actual test results.

And the conversation doesn’t stop at pets. Callen, a neuroscientist by training, discusses the Clean Label Project’s research involving baby food, protein powders, sunscreen and other consumer products.
