Es ist 20.30 Uhr am Samstagabend (Ortszeit), als die Angst ins noble Hilton Hotel einzieht. Dumpfe Schläge hallen durch die Flure, für ein paar Augenblicke macht sich Verwirrung im Saal breit. Vorne auf der Bühne sitzt US-Präsident Donald Trump (79) neben seiner Frau Melania (56), vor ihnen Journalisten aus der ganzen Welt, die über das Weiße Haus berichten.Sekunden später bricht Panik aus. Die Anwesenden realisieren: Es sind Schüsse gefallen, irgendwo in der Nähe. Agenten werfen sich auf den Präsidenten, schaffen ihn, seine Frau und andere Spitzenpolitiker aus dem Raum. Die anderen Gäste des Korrespondenten-Dinners bleiben im Raum, ducken und verstecken sich. Kellner laufen aus dem Saal. Was sie noch nicht wissen: Offenbar wurde gerade ein erneutes Attentat auf Donald Trump verhindert.
Welt-Chefredakteur Helge Fuhst ist während alldem mit im Saal, erlebt die Panik hautnah: „Hier drinnen wurde es auf einmal ganz laut, weil sich Hunderte von Leuten innerhalb von Sekunden unter die Tische geworfen haben“, sagt er kurz nach dem vereitelten Anschlag.
