Adrian Dantley Pushes the Pistons to the 1988 NBA Finals

June 3, 1988 - In front of close to 40,000 Silverdome fans, Adrian Dantley scored 22 points in a 95-90 Game 6 victory over the Boston Celtics, helping clinch the Pistons' first NBA Finals berth since moving to Detroit.

While Dantley and teammate Isiah Thomas would eventually find themselves at odds with one another, following the series-clinching victory over the Celtics, it was all vibes.

"The thing I'm most proud of I think is Adrian Dantley," Thomas said. "I've been out there for seven (years) but he's been out there for twelve. And if there's anybody who deserves to play in a championship game, it's definitely Adrian Dantley."

Dantley would go on to lead the Pistons in scoring in their Finals series against Los Angeles, averaging 21.3 points while shooting a hyper efficient .573 from the field and .859 from the free throw line. In the event of a Pistons championship in '88, Dantley would have been a strong Finals MVP candidate (alongside Thomas, who had a similarly impressive series). Alas, the Pistons fell to the Lakers in seven.

The 1988 Finals would serve as Dantley only shot at a ring. The following season, he was swapped for Mark Aguirre near the 1989 trade deadline. Aguirre and the Pistons went on to win back-to-back championships.
