Elizabeth menggantikan sang ayah, Raja George VI yang mangkat dalam tidurnya di Sandringham House pada 6 Februari 1952 karena sakit.
Penobatan Ratu Elizabeth II sebagai kepala persemakmuran dan ratu Inggris digelar di Westminster Abbey.
Momen tersebut jadi kali pertama acara penobatan di kerajaan disiarkan secara internasional.
Siaran televisi tersebut merupakan ide dari Pangeran Philip sebagai ketua panitia acara penobatan.
Hal ini pun sempat menuai pertentangan dari sejumlah orang, seperti Perdana Menteri Inggris kala itu, Sir Winston Churcill.
Pada akhirnya, acara penobatan tetap disiarkan melalui televisi melihat tingginya minat rakyat.
