Pentagon press policy: Media outlets reject new access pledge
Several media outlets have rejected new rules for journalists based in the Pentagon. In recent weeks, the Department of Defense has told journalists that it would require a pledge saying they won’t gather any information that hasn’t been authorized for release. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and his team have said reporters who did not acknowledge the policy in writing by Tuesday have 24 hours to turn in their badges and begin clearing out their workspaces.CNN, Fox News, ABC News, CBS News, and NBC News released a joint statement, saying:
“Today, we join virtually every other news organization in declining to agree to the Pentagon’s new requirements, which would restrict journalists’ ability to keep the nation and the world informed of important national security issues. The policy is without precedent and threatens core journalistic protections. We will continue to cover the U.S. military as each of our organizations has done for many decades, upholding the principles of a free and independent press.”
In a post on X, Hegseth said, "Pentagon access is a privilege, not a right."
