The Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on ancient history continues with a video on ancient Britain - the island beyond the edge of the world and how the Roman and Greek authors described it. Long before Rome conquered Britain, Mediterranean writers imagined the island at the edge of the known world. Some doubted it existed at all. Yet British tin was reaching distant markets centuries before Julius Caesar crossed the Channel. How much did the Greeks and Romans really know? This video follows the scattered clues left by ancient explorers, geographers and naturalists. We begin with Bronze Age tin routes and the elusive Carthaginian sailor Himilco, then retrace Pytheas of Massalia’s remarkable voyage around Britain. His account described its shape, northern islands, long summer days and tin producing communities, but later writers argued over what to believe. And why did some dismiss the earliest eyewitness accounts? Strabo mapped a Britain he had never seen and recorded its trade, people and war chariots. Pliny the Elder noted its farming, wildlife and pearls. Caesar, Plutarch and Diodorus Siculus add glimpses of invasions, local resistance and the trade that linked Britain to Gaul and the wider Mediterranean. Taken together, these accounts show an island that was both mysterious and connected. What was observation, what was secondhand report, and what was ancient imagination?
