Charles Barkley vs. Pistons: 36 Points, 15 Rebounds, 1 Iconic Fist Fight, Division Title

April 19, 1990 - This is, without question, one of the greatest regular season games of Charles Barkley's career. In the midst of one of the closest MVP races in league history, Barkley rolled into Detroit with a chance to help his 76ers clinch the Atlantic Division and he responded with 36 points (12-of-20 shooting), 15 rebounds, and 2 steals in a decisive 107-97 win. Then, to cap things off, he went toe to toe with Bill Laimbeer in one of the most infamous brawls in modern NBA history.

The resulting punishments: Suspensions – Bill Laimbeer (1 game), Charles Barkley (1 game), Scott Hastings (1 game); Fines: Laimbeer ($20,000), Barkley ($20,000), Hastings ($10,000), Isiah Thomas ($7,500), 10 players ($500 a piece for leaving the bench), each team ($50,000 for failing to control its players).

Barkley ultimately finished as runner-up to Magic Johnson in the MVP race, despite finishing with more first place votes. While Barkley eclipsed Magic with 38 first place votes to Magic's 27, Johnson emerged as the winner with 636 total points to Barkley's 614.

The Sixers, meanwhile, underperformed in the postseason, barely scraping by the Cavaliers in the first round before being eliminated in five games by the Chicago Bulls in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. A Pistons-Sixers playoff bout never came to fruition.

As a final, mostly insignificant note, if anyone were to notice a continuity error at the end of the clip between the Sixers walking off the floor and the slow motion celebration with Barkley in the locker room, that locker room clip was moved up from later in the broadcast.
