Le lezioni di latino saranno facoltative. Lo annuncia il ministro dell'Istruzione Giuseppe Valditara: "Pensiamo di reintrodurre opzionalmente elementi di latino già dalle medie, dalla seconda per la precisione". L'obiettivo? Aprire le porte "a un vasto patrimonio di civiltà e tradizioni; poi rafforziamo la consapevolezza della relazione che lega la lingua italiana a quella latina. E poi c’è il tema, importantissimo, dell’eredità".
Verrà tagliata fuori geostoria alle superiori, e verrà invece approfondita la storia italiana, insieme alla letteratura e alla mitologia, non solo quella greca ma anche orientale e nordica. In classe si leggeranno anche passi della Bibbia, con lo scopo, dice Valditara, di fornire una comprensione culturale di un testo pilastro della cultura occidentale. Insomma, a scuola torna un'attenzione, affievolitasi nel tempo, alle già presenti materie umanistiche.
La notizia ha sconvolto le opposizioni. Elly Schlein ha commentato così: "Quella di Valditara è un’idea nostalgica che scambia l’autoritarismo con l’autorevolezza, c’è nostalgia delle bacchettate sulla mani".
