And that's a wrap, all 112 boss fights and encounters done no damage. I'll have the final compilation up tomorrow sometime, but for now I'm happy to have them done. I'll also use this description to put my final thoughts on the game to refer back to. I normally use the final compilation for that, but with so many timestamps I won't be able to stay under the character limit, and this video ends up being a fitting example for what I want to talk about.
Overall, I had a great time with the game, it was enjoyable to play for the most part, but with some issues along the way. The combat and gameplay itself is excellent. There's absolutely massive variety of gameplay and build options to pick from, catering for basically every single option you could think of. While I didn't really delve too much into it and stuck to the one setup (which I always tend to do tbh), you can see how wide and varied it was. Very good in that regard.
Exploring feels rewarding, even if it's a little tedious and a lot of busy work at the time. But it feels like you're always getting some sort of upgrade so it never really feels not worth it. Performance was also very good, I had next to no issues with stutters or crashes really.
The main bosses themselves were also excellent, and very enjoyable to fight for the most part. They stood out from the many fodder boss fights, which was one of the biggest issues I had. Either way, there's a lot of positives and I think it's a great game overall, so I'd like to reiterate that before getting onto the negatives for me.
The things I didn't really enjoy:
There was a massive amount of repeat bosses, side bosses, and humanoid enemies / master that all felt very unremarkable. Having most basic enemies all have a "boss" version became a bit tiresome to me. While it's fine to have these, for somebody like me who likes to upload every single boss fight individually, there were multiple occasions I started to question that decision and what the point of it was.
Nearly every humanoid fight felt the same, where you could just stunlock them the entire time, break their ki bar, and repeat. I thought this might just be limited to the weapons I tried, but it can be done with nearly every setup. And while you could choose not to do that, with so many different "bosses" in the game, it felt like a waste of time if you didn't, and to just get them out of the way.
Similarly, and as really highlighted in this video, it gets to a point where it doesn't really feel like you're fighting a boss anymore, but rather avoiding an attack or two until you break their ki bar, and then have the boss stunned for most of the fight from attack chains. You start to notice this early on, but the stronger you get and more you progress, it feels less like a fair boss fight. Nearly all of the bosses had me dodging a few attacks here and there before the ki break, and then during that window and while they shift to the yokai realm, you normally have massive openings to deal damage. You then repeat this for the fight, and it feels like a majority of the fight is spent with the boss just unable to do anything while taking a beating. It's a little strange to me, but even looking at other more skilled and dedicated Nioh channels, this seems to be the norm.
Lastly, if you're exploring and unlocking everything, you naturally get very, very overpowered. Again, this could be avoidable I guess, but there were multiple strings of bosses where I'd just not level up or unlock things to try and offset this. You can self-impose further than that, but I wanted to see what the natural progression was like.
Either way, despite those points, I did have a very enjoyable time with the game. I will have to see how my approach for Nioh 1 and 2 differ though, and whether I just do one compilation or individual bosses. Interest for this game was incredibly low across the board, despite most people enjoying it. But I've covered a lot of similar games with loads of bosses, and this one was notably lower than any other before.
