United States Coast Guard Advanced Helicopter Rescue School (AHRS) in Astoria, Oregon
The United States Coast Guard Advanced Helicopter Rescue School (AHRS) is an elite training program hosted at US Coast Guard Base Astoria, located within the Astoria Regional Airport-AST in Warrenton, Oregon. Known as the "graduate level" of search-and-rescue training, the school is designed to prepare helicopter crews for the most extreme maritime environments. The program specifically targets the "Graveyard of the Pacific"—the area near the mouth of the Columbia River—where towering surf, sea caves, and vertical cliffs provide the grueling conditions necessary for advanced certification. While originally established in 1996 for rescue swimmers, the school now trains full MH-60 Jayhawk and MH-65 Dolphin crews, including pilots and flight mechanics, to ensure seamless crew coordination during high-stress missions. The course typically runs eight times a year, split between late fall and late winter, to ensure students encounter the most challenging weather and sea conditions possible. Over five intense days, students master technical skills such as cliff-side hoisting, navigating heavy surf zones, and performing rescues in confined sea caves where traditional flight patterns are impossible. Since its inception, the school has been credited with significantly increasing the success rate of complex rescues, contributing to the Coast Guard's mission of saving thousands of lives annually in hazardous coastal regions.
