Philippines Calls Out China's “Bullying” As Vietnam Builds Island |South China Sea

The Philippines and China continue to be at loggerheads. The Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela has called out China over its alleged "expansionism" and "bullying" in the South China Sea. He highlighted the threat the Philippines faces from China. The statement came against the backdrop of a report by a US think tank on Vietnam. The report suggested that Hanoi has significantly expanded island-building work in areas it claims in the Spratly Islands. The work could reportedly surpass Beijing’s scale of work in the South China Sea. Xi Jinping-led China claims almost the entire South China Sea. It does not consider claims by Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam. Beijing has condemned the Vietnamese activity. The Philippine Coast Guard has also objected to Vietnam’s reclamation activity. However, he emphasised that Hanoi has not made any new claims, unlike China in Scarborough Shoal.
