Touhou Koumakyou New Classic - Lunatic 1CC (Reimu B)
Touhou Koumakyou: The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil New Classic was released on Steam, Switch 1 & 2, and PS5 about a week ago. This is a remake of the doujin game from 2002, which was the first Touhou title developed for Windows (and the 6th game in the series overall). The remake, of course, has all new graphics and music, and it brings in some features that were introduced in later titles, like the flashing red indicator on the bottom of the screen to show the boss' position, an always active point of collection line in the top third of the screen, visible hitboxes, and more. Plus, this game comes bundled with the original game from 2002, so it's a great deal at only $17.99.I've tried out various Touhou games in the past, mainly when I first got into shmups, but I never put significant time into one of them. So with this remake coming out, it looked like the perfect starting point, and I wanted to give one of these games a real chance. I started out on Hard mode to get a feel for the game, and after clearing that, I started working on Lunatic. This is my first clear. I still don't have the enemy waves and boss attack orders totally memorized, so it's pretty sloppy in a few areas, but the game's pretty forgiving with all the resources it gives you.
I never watched much Touhou gameplay before playing this, so I was kinda surprised that this I'd actually a pretty straight forward shmup. I expected it to have some central gimmick like most of the newer games I've seen, but that isn't the case at all with this one. You just shoot, dodge, and graze for score, with no excessive bullet canceling or anything like that. I'm almost certain I won't put time into scoring this one, but I think it's really fun to just play casually - going for 1CCs, no deaths, no bombs, and stuff like that.
One thing that Touhou seems to do better than most other shmups (probably almost all of them) is its gradual increase in difficulty. Clearing Normal mode prepares you pretty well for Hard, and clearing Hard prepares you for Lunatic. There's a clear step up in difficulty between them, but they're not so far apart that it makes the lower difficulties seem pointless. I haven't tried Easy yet, but I assume even that mode can put a fight for new players. It's much at guiding players to higher difficulties than stuff like novice modes or super easy modes that you see in CAVE and M2 games. The gulf in difficulty between those and the original games is so big that those modes are practically useless for learning the game.
The spell card system is a pretty good idea too, where each attack has a bonus for 'capturing' it, i.e. getting through it without bombing or dying. And it's great how you can practice each spell card individually, but that leads me to my biggest complaint with this game. The practice options have some good features like the spell card practice, but you also have to unlock each spell card somehow, which is a little annoying. Moreover, you can't just go into a training mode and start a stage from the midboss or boss, your only option is to practice a stage from the beginning. You also can't adjust any of the details like rank, which I didn't know was a thing in this game until I got to the knife girl in stage 6, and her shots were a lot faster than I was used to from practice. What's here isn't that bad, but practice options should be better than this.
I think that covers mostly everything. As someone new to Touhou myself, I can say that this game is a great entry point for the series. It has difficulty options suitable for all player levels, and it's just a very well made shmup that you can pick up for a low price. I definitely recommend trying it out!
