Kings GM Joe Axelson Discusses Move From Kansas City to Sacramento (1985)

January 24, 1985 - As it turns out, the Kings are one of the most well traveled teams in NBA history. Getting their start in the league as the Rochester Royals, the franchise moved to Cincinnati in 1957. After 15 years in Ohio, the Royals continued their way westward in 1972, rebranding themselves as the Kansas City-Omaha Kings (Omaha would be dropped from the name in 1975).

By the early '80s, things were getting a bit weird for the Kings. First, the roof of their home arena (Kemper Arena) collapsed, forcing the team to play the 1979-80 season in a temporary home. Then, most infamously, they were forced to fire general manager John Begzas following a expired postage stamp scandal. That's right, in one of the most '80s-specific scandals in NBA history, Begzas acquired stamps in bulk from a neighborhood friend, sold them to the team for the price he paid, then was later notified by the post office that the organization had been sending outgoing mail adorned with used stamps.

Wanting to send a strong message to all those considering stamp-related shenanigans, the Kings fired Begzas and eventually rehired former Kings general manager Joe Axelson, notorious for his previous mismanagement, as when he traded Oscar Robertson for Flynn Robinson and Charlie Paulk and once presented so unimpressively to potential No. 1 overall draft pick Magic Johnson that Johnson opted to head back to school for his sophomore year (lest he be drafted by Axelson's Kings).

And that brings us to 1985, two years after the Kings had been sold to an ownership group based out of Sacramento. Sitting down with former Milwaukee Bucks all-star Jon McGlocklin, GM Joe Axelson justified his team's imminent move to the west coast, pending NBA approval. Sure enough, on April 16, 1985, the NBA approved the Kings' relocation, sending them to Sacramento, where they've been ever since.
