For the millions of wildebeest on this great journey, the route is fraught with danger—and for those the herd leaves behind, the threats multiply. In this footage, a young wildebeest calf stands alone on a riverbank, seemingly at a loss.
However, being left behind is the least of its worries. Emerging from the water, a massive Nile crocodile begins walking directly toward the youngster. Basking in a state of ignorance, the young wildebeest calmly watches the approaching reptile. Ordinarily, crocodiles are ambush predators that wait for prey to come to the water’s edge before striking from below. Seeing a giant crocodile actively stalk a target on land like a lion is highly unusual.
It is only when the crocodile gets within a few meters that the calf finally shows alarm and tries to move away. Unfortunately, as its legs buckle, the true reason it could not flee earlier becomes heartbreakingly clear.
