Insiden itu memicu kecaman dunia internasional atas lemahnya perlindungan kawasan konservasi di Indonesia.Tujuh tahun berselang, para perempuan adat Yenbuba bekerja sama dengan para ilmuwan untuk memulihkan terumbu karang yang rusak menggunakan teknologi transplantasi karang.
Keterlibatan perempuan adat ini menjadi penting karena mereka lah yang memiliki pengetahuan tradisional tentang lingkungan dan ekosistem laut di wilayah itu.
