Unklar bleibt weiterhin die Ursache des Unglücks: Während US-Stellen von einem möglichen Unfall mit einem zweiten Tankflugzeug sprechen, behaupten iranische Medien und proiranische Milizen, die Maschine abgeschossen zu haben. Mit den vier Toten steigt die Zahl der in dem Konflikt getöteten US-Soldaten auf mindestens elf. Mehr als 140 weitere wurden laut Pentagon verletzt. Der Vorfall könnte auch innenpolitisch in den USA Folgen haben – insbesondere mit Blick auf die kommenden Zwischenwahlen.
