Il 14 luglio 1933 arriva al convento di San Giovanni Rotondo la lettera del Santo Uffizio che libera Padre Pio dalle restrizioni imposte negli anni precedenti. Il frate può finalmente tornare a celebrare messa in pubblico e a confessare i fedeli nel suo confessionale. Non si tratta di una riabilitazione piena e totale — il Santo Uffizio afferma che il carattere naturale dei fenomeni attribuiti a Padre Pio non è stato provato — ma resta comunque una grande vittoria per il frate. Quando celebra la messa su quell’altare, la chiesa è gremita di fedeli commossi. Tuttavia, Padre Pio appare profondamente segnato dagli anni di reclusione: i capelli imbiancati, le spalle cadenti e il passo incerto. Nonostante ciò, comincia per lui un periodo più tranquillo, con restrizioni che, di anno in anno, vengono progressivamente mitigate, mentre la fama delle sue stimmate si diffonde in tutto il mondo.
