Putin's power play in Africa - Russian influence in the Sahel region | DW Documentary
Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger are all under military rule following coups d'état. While western troops were forced out, in some cases to the cheers of local population, Russia stepped in to fill the vacuum with weapons, advisors, and propaganda. From a population standpoint, the Sahel is one of the world's youngest regions. It's also one of the world's poorest regions. People here face a lack of opportunity, the tangible effects of climate change, and terrorism. According to recent figures, over half of all terrorism-related deaths occur in the Sahel region.
Russia, meanwhile, has been backing the new junta regimes - all the while pursuing its own strategic interests. The Kremlin has been steadily building a zone of influence in a region once given promises of democracy and developmental aid. The endgame is about power and precious natural resources.
This documentary takes viewers to countries where journalism has become all but impossible. Those who shared their stories risked everything to speak out, while the film team entered dangerous situations to document what has become reality in the Sahel - a world shaped by intimidation, repression, and geopolitical struggle.
The film exposes how Russia is extending its grasp on the African continent with an iron grip. But it also explores the reasons for this shift. At least initially, many in the Sahel region welcomed Russia's new role.
Putin's Power Play in Africa is an investigative documentary from the heart of a region that has become a pawn in the global power struggle.
