To start, this was done during my first playthrough on Action difficulty. I'm aware there's also Carnage difficulty which unlocks after, which I'll be returning to after this and posting a compilation of all bosses no damage on carnage difficulty. I prefer to have my first playthrough be the one that I post individually and cover first on the channel, as that's the base experience of the game and it allows me to record and include all of the cutscenes too.
Other than that, for my opinion / review on the game: I loved it. There's very few games that I enjoyed playing as much as I did with Onimusha, and this is as somebody new to the franchise. The combat is up there as the one of the best in any game I've played. I cannot overstate just how good it feels to play and how responsive everything is. Between the 4 different methods you have to deal with enemy attacks (dodge, parry, deflect and issen), all of which feel viable and rewarding in their own way. And when you combine them together it just feels incredibly satisfying. All of the animations are spot on, the swords and weapons clash perfectly at all times, and there was almost no moment in the game where I felt there was an unfair attack or strange hitbox to handle. It all just feels right, and that's rare in most games.
The main story was far beyond my expectations too, and I found myself enjoying it the entire time. The characters were animated very well, especially Mushashi and all his facial animations and movements during both combat and cutscenes. Just absolutely spot on.
The bosses individually were also very good and memorable, and duo fights in this game were a very pleasant surprise. They're normally something I do not enjoy in other games as they generally lead to overlapping and annoying attacks, but one of the best fights in this game was the Ifuu & Burai boss where they work together perfectly, but fairly. A really fun fight, and many others were enjoyable too. The final boss was also well worth the wait.
Difficulty-wise, it's on the easier side, which is maybe due to action difficulty, but naturally that won't make much of a difference when going for no damage anyway, just a longer fight to handle. Additionally, because the animations and everything feels so good, you also get to a point where all of the fights feel 100% comfortable to repeat. I enjoyed it anyway, it wasn't easy to the point it wasn't enjoyable, but it wasn't super difficult either.
As for my critiques, there were just way too many repeat boss fights. Most games handle these as elites which is usually fine after the initial fight, but as each of them have their own boss health bar I felt obliged to cover them all. It got a bit tiresome. I also could've done without the open world and busywork side of things. Some of the side stories were fine, but I think I would've preferred it being a bit more condensed to the main story and bosses. That's personal preference though. Lastly, I would've liked to have carnage as an option from the start. I know in theory it's similar to an NG+, but from labelling alone, having a different difficulty unlock later sort of makes the first playthrough feel like you're not getting the hardest experience. Again, not a big deal, but just something I would've liked from the start.
All-in-all, what a brilliant game. I'm very excited and hopeful for more.
