La senatrice di Fratelli d’Italia lo ha comunicato con una lettera alla presidente del Consiglio Giorgia Meloni, chiudendo una giornata di tensioni culminata in un vero e proprio terremoto istituzionale. «Cara Giorgia, ti rassegno le mie dimissioni», ha scritto, sottolineando di aver svolto il ruolo «al meglio delle mie possibilità» e ricordando che il suo certificato penale resta «immacolato». La mossa arriva poche ore dopo che la premier aveva pubblicamente auspicato il suo passo indietro, sulla scia delle dimissioni del sottosegretario alla Giustizia Andrea Delmastro e della capo di gabinetto del ministero, Giusi Bartolozzi. Entrambi avevano lasciato l’incarico nella notte tra lunedì e martedì, assumendosi la responsabilità politica della pesante sconfitta al referendum sulla riforma della giustizia.
Meloni, in una nota di Palazzo Chigi, aveva espresso «apprezzamento» per la scelta di Delmastro e Bartolozzi, invitando Santanchè a seguire la medesima linea di sensibilità istituzionale. Questa mattina Daniela Santanchè era arrivata regolarmente al ministero, senza rispondere ai cronisti, confermando l’agenda di lavoro. Poi, nel pomeriggio, il dietrofront. L’opposizione ha incassato la notizia con durezza. Pd, M5S e Italia Viva avevano già depositato una mozione di sfiducia, accusando Meloni di aver tollerato troppo a lungo una situazione, secondo l'opposizione, imbarazzante.
