Episode 2198:

Steve Chou explains why the word wholesale promises a margin it rarely delivers. A wholesaler easy enough for you to find is easy enough for everyone else to find, suggested retail prices are often invented, and some of the US wholesalers he met at trade shows quoted two to three times what he could get direct from his own vendors. Amazon then removes the last bit of cover, because shoppers compare identical listings instantly and whatever competitive advantage a wholesale account seemed to offer disappears into a race to the bottom.

Quotes to ponder:

"If you were able to find your wholesaler easily, chances are that a bunch of other people have as well."

"Once that happens, it will quickly become a race to the bottom in terms of price."

"The reality is that anyone out there can call themselves a wholesaler as long as they do the paperwork."
