'Chaos' & 'despair' at Gaza hospital after Israeli strike on 'safe zone' - UN eyewitness | DW News

Israel confirmed that an airstrike in the Gaza Strip on Saturday killed a senior Hamas leader.

The Israeli military said that Hamas' Khan Younis brigade commander Rafa Salama died in the attack on the al-Mawasi camp in the south of the Gaza Strip. The area had previously been declared a safe, humanitarian zone by Israel. Hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians are believed to be taking shelter in the camp.

The Hamas-run Heath Ministry in Gaza says at least 92 people were killed in the attack, while hundreds more were injured. Many of those wounded were taken to Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. Scott Anderson from the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) was there at the time and he told us what he witnessed.

The strike comes as the Israeli military continues its campaign in Gaza against Hamas, in retaliation for the October 7 terror attacks in Israel that left some 1,200 people dead, mostly civilians.

Hamas and other Palestinians groups also took 251 hostages, 116 of whom remain in Gaza. The Israeli military says 42 of the remaining hostages in Gaza have died.

Hamas is designated a terrorist organization by the US, Germany, EU, and others.
