James Cook - Parametric Tokamak Design in BLUEMIRA - IPAM at UCLA

Recorded 08 May 2026. James Cook of the UK Atomic Energy Authority presents "Parametric Tokamak Design in BLUEMIRA" at IPAM's Fusion Device Design and Engineering Workshop.
Abstract: The transition from conceptual fusion concepts to viable reactor designs requires navigating a vast and complex design space, demanding integrated evaluation across physics and engineering. Traditional design workflows struggle to efficiently explore this space; broad systems studies are typically carried out at low fidelity, whilst high-fidelity studies are performed infrequently. We introduce BLUEMIRA, an open-source, multi-fidelity, parametric framework which is designed to bridge the gap between low-fidelity systems codes and high-fidelity studies. By coupling automated analyses with sequential optimisation routines we demonstrate how BLUEMIRA facilitates deep design exploration taking into account systems such as the Toroidal Field (TF) coils, Poloidal Field (PF) coils, First Wall and Blanket design, and remote maintenance.
We describe the implementation of parametric design workflow for a conventional EU-DEMO-like tokamak, detailing the various design stages and the optimisation problems solved for common tokamak design issues. We present indicative results, highlighting differences in results between PROCESS and BLUEMIRA.

TubeReader video aggregator is a website that collects and organizes online videos from the YouTube source. Video aggregation is done for different purposes, and TubeReader take different approaches to achieve their purpose.

Our try to collect videos of high quality or interest for visitors to view; the collection may be made by editors or may be based on community votes.

Another method is to base the collection on those videos most viewed, either at the aggregator site or at various popular video hosting sites.

TubeReader site exists to allow users to collect their own sets of videos, for personal use as well as for browsing and viewing by others; TubeReader can develop online communities around video sharing.

Our site allow users to create a personalized video playlist, for personal use as well as for browsing and viewing by others.
