Zimbabwe's government is set to hold hearings into the Gukurahundi massacres of the 1980s, a dark chapter in the country's history that saw an estimated 20,000 people killed.The military crackdown, ordered by then-President Robert Mugabe, targeted alleged dissidents in Matabeleland. Victims like Joyce Ngwenya, who lost an arm and a leg during the violence, are sceptical about finding closure through this process.
Critics argue that the hearings, now to be held behind closed doors, may shield perpetrators rather than provide justice.
The initiative, launched by current President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has raised concerns due to his role as security minister during the massacres.
