Il 1848 segna una data fondamentale nella storia europea: è l’anno delle rivoluzioni che infiammano il continente e danno impulso alla nascita delle coscienze nazionali. Anche Roma vive il suo momento di svolta, e al centro della scena c’è Pio IX, il papa che era stato salutato come un riformatore ma che presto avrebbe visto crollare il suo sogno liberale.Dopo un inizio progressista, Pio IX tenta di invertire la rotta: nomina Giacomo Antonelli Segretario di Stato, espressione dell’ala più conservatrice della Curia, e affida il governo della città a Pellegrino Rossi, un moderato deciso a ristabilire l’ordine.Ma il 15 novembre 1848 segna il punto di non ritorno. Rossi viene assassinato all’interno di Palazzo della Cancelleria: un gruppo di giovani lo colpisce alla gola mentre sale le scale del suo ufficio. L’autore resta ignoto, ma il popolo non condanna il gesto — anzi, nelle strade si canta “Benedetta la mano che lo uccise.”Sotto il Quirinale scoppiano le proteste.
