'Abiy's $475MN Nile Boom!': Ethiopia's GERD Exports Hydropower Across Africa | Firstpost Africa

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, or GERD, has already changed Ethiopia's power landscape, generating a major share of national electricity while helping Addis Ababa expand exports to neighbours including Kenya and Djibouti. Electricity export revenues have also surged, giving Ethiopia an increasingly important source of foreign currency. But Abiy Ahmed's energy ambition goes beyond GERD. Ethiopia is planning additional hydropower projects on the Blue Nile with a combined potential of around 5,700 megawatts. The strategy is clear: generate more electricity, power industrialisation and sell surplus energy across Africa. That ambition is also intensifying the long-running dispute with Egypt over Nile water security, while Sudan faces its own strategic calculations.
