AI agents are going to make payments. Lots of payments. That still doesn't tell us why an agent would want Bitcoin.Cory Klippsten takes apart the popular AI Bitcoin thesis: AI agents are coming, AI agents need money, and Bitcoin is money for the internet. An agent working for a company that keeps its treasury in dollars, buying data from a company that wants dollars, has no reason to put Bitcoin in the middle. And AI can generate an extraordinary number of transactions without generating much economic value. A billion one-tenth-of-a-cent payments is only a million dollars.
The case that holds up is saving. When the Bitcoin Policy Institute ran 36 AI models through the same monetary scenarios, the models preferred stablecoins for making payments. For storing value, nearly four out of five responses chose Bitcoin. People save in Bitcoin first. Payments come later.
