Bangladesh’s foreign policy appears to be entering a new strategic phase, with developments involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey drawing attention across South Asia. A six-member delegation from Bangladesh’s military intelligence agency DGFI recently visited Pakistan amid growing discussion over Bangladesh–Pakistan security cooperation and Pakistan’s expanding regional influence.
At the same time, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has invited Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to visit Saudi Arabia, highlighting Riyadh’s efforts to deepen bilateral relations with Dhaka across trade, investment, energy, labour and other sectors. Saudi Arabia has also expressed interest in significant investments in Bangladesh, including the port sector.
The third dimension is Turkey’s growing strategic engagement with Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and potentially Bangladesh following the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement. The agreement between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye has generated significant debate over the emergence of a new regional security architecture and its implications for India.
