We Pay for Everything, But Own Nothing

Are We Stuck in a Digital Matrix?

Most of us think the problem is screen time, that we spend too much time on our phones. But the real issue is that almost every app we depend on is now built to keep us paying, waiting and clicking.

We pay for five OTT platforms and still rent films with ads. A plate of biryani picks up a delivery fee, a platform fee, a packaging fee and a “VIP” charge. Cancel buttons hide behind three menus, spam calls come in all day, and the data of more than 81 crore Indians has already been put up for sale on the dark web.

At the same time, none of this is easy to walk away from. These services now run our daily lives, and every new update and AI feature is sold to us as a better user experience.

This is not about one bad app. It is about a system where every service has become a subscription and nothing we pay for is really ours. And if we find it exhausting, think about our parents facing OTPs, deepfakes and digital arrest calls.
