El 7 de agosto, en La Meca, Mohammed bin Salmán, Erdogan y el primer ministro pakistaní Sharif firmaron una alianza de defensa mutua. A comienzos de octubre, tras los ataques de los hutíes contra aeropuertos y refinerías saudíes, el pacto se ha activado por primera vez: Turquía y Pakistán enviarán tropas a Arabia Saudí. El ministro de Exteriores turco, Hakan Fidan, lo compara con el artículo 5 de la OTAN.
Riad se ha quedado rodeada por todos los flancos. La guerra de Irán ha puesto en duda las garantías de Estados Unidos, Emiratos ha salido de la OPEP y se acerca a Israel, y los hutíes bloquean el mar Rojo. Turquía, con el segundo ejército de la OTAN, y Pakistán, con unas 170 cabezas nucleares, ponen la fuerza militar. Arabia Saudí pone la chequera.
Sobre el papel encajan, pero la alianza no tiene mando integrado, no ha hecho ninguna maniobra conjunta y mezcla armamento occidental con armamento chino. Y en 2015 el Parlamento pakistaní votó por unanimidad no ayudar a Riad en Yemen.
