Tensions are rising along the Colombian-Venezuelan border as opposition groups call for street protests against the government and to defend democracy, just days before one of the country’s top opposition leaders is set to receive the Nobel Peace Prize while remaining in hiding. Meanwhile, Venezuelan authorities have, for the first time, hinted at the possibility of an armed struggle to defend the nation’s sovereignty, deploying forces and militias near the border and along the coast.
