تنگه هرمز، گذرگاهی باریک میان ایران و عمان، یکی از حیاتی‌ترین شریان‌های انرژی جهان به‌شمار می‌رود؛ روزانه بیش از ۲۰ میلیون بشکه نفت، معادل یک‌پنجم کل عرضه جهانی، از این مسیر عبور می‌کند. پس از حمله بمب‌افکن‌های آمریکایی به سه مرکز هسته‌ای در ایران، مقام‌های جمهوری اسلامی تهدید به بستن این تنگه کرده‌اند؛ تهدیدی که می‌تواند منجر به اختلال گسترده در عرضه جهانی انرژی شود.
بستن این تنگه، احتمال افزایش شدید قیمت نفت را در پی دارد و ممکن است کشورهای عربی حاشیه خلیج فارس را به واکنش نظامی وادارد. این اقدام همچنین اقتصاد کشورهایی چون چین، هند، ژاپن و کره جنوبی را نیز با بحران مواجه خواهد کرد؛ کشورهایی که بخش عمده‌ای از واردات نفت و گاز خود را از این مسیر تأمین می‌کنند. چین به تنهایی نزدیک به ۹۰ درصد از نفت صادراتی ایران را خریداری می‌کند.
ایالات متحده، که ناوگان پنجم نیروی دریایی‌اش در بحرین مستقر است، مسئولیت تأمین امنیت کشتیرانی در این منطقه را بر عهده دارد و در گذشته نیز برای حفاظت از نفتکش‌ها در جریان «جنگ نفتکش‌ها» در دهه ۱۹۸۰ نقش مؤثری ایفا کرده است. کارشناسان بر این باورند که آمریکا و متحدانش می‌توانند در صورت بروز اختلال، مسیر عبور نفتکش‌ها را به سرعت بازگشایی کنند.
با این حال، گزارش‌هایی وجود دارد مبنی بر اینکه برخی نفتکش‌ها از عبور از این مسیر پرتنش خودداری کرده‌اند. اکنون جهان با نگرانی به تنگه هرمز می‌نگرد؛ چرا که این گذرگاه باریک ممکن است به صحنه یک درگیری نظامی جدید تبدیل شود؛ درگیری‌ای با پیامدهایی فراتر از منطقه که می‌تواند بر اقتصاد جهانی سایه بیفکند.
