Putin’s Russia Targets Mozambique After Rwanda Secures Projects In Cabo Delgado | Firstpost Africa

Russia is looking beyond the Sahel and turning its attention to Mozambique’s energy-rich north. During Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s visit to Maputo, Moscow offered support to help Mozambique fight the insurgency in Cabo Delgado, a region sitting on more than $50 billion worth of LNG projects and vast natural gas reserves. Often described as Africa’s next Qatar, Mozambique’s LNG ambitions have been delayed by years of terrorism. But with TotalEnergies restarting its $20 billion LNG project and other major investments moving forward, the race for influence is heating up Rwanda already plays a key security role in Cabo Delgado, and now Russia is positioning itself as another potential partner. For Moscow, Mozambique represents a chance to regain influence in one of Africa’s most important future energy markets. Alyson Le Grange brings you more on this story on Firstpost Africa.
