In an interview with Firstpost, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the protests in August 2024 were “hijacked by extremist factions.” She said the protests were “far more a coup than a popular uprising.” She added that she did not order security forces to open fire on crowds during the unrest. Sheikh Hasina called the deaths during the violent protests a “national tragedy.”The former Bangladesh Prime Minister also said that India is Bangladesh’s “oldest friend and the largest democracy” in the region. She raised concerns over the Yunus government’s seemingly “dangerous alienation from India.” Hasina said India and Bangladesh share “deep cultural ties and critical security interests,” adding that “no amount of engagement with China can replace this fundamental relationship” with India.
She further criticised the country’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, for failing to protect minorities, saying that their businesses and temples are being attacked under the current administration. She stated that “attacks on Hindu communities and other minorities since August 2024 are not random acts of violence. They are part of a deliberate campaign by extremist elements who have been emboldened and abetted by the current administration.” She also criticised Yunus for not holding elections even after spending fifteen months in power.
