Zuvor müssen die US-Demokraten aber eine heikle Entscheidung treffen: Suchen sie den Erfolg in der Mitte oder in linkeren Positionen?Bei der Vorwahl im Bundesstaat Michigan sieht der US-Sender NBC den progressiven Kandidaten Abdul El-Sayed vorn. Stephan Bierling, Professor für Internationale Politik und transatlantische Beziehungen an der Universität Regensburg über die Bedeutung der Wahl in Michigan: „Seit Mamdanis Wahlsieg ist im Grunde in der Demokratischen Partei nichts so wie es vorher war und wenn jetzt El-Sayed noch zum Senatskandidaten für Michigan wird und vielleicht die Wahlen dann auch noch gewinnt, dann ist das ein Erdbeben für die Demokratische Partei.“
