Space debris is no longer just an orbital problem. Experts warn that falling space junk — from dead satellites to spent rocket stages — is increasingly passing through some of the world’s busiest airspace during uncontrolled re-entries.On average, a spacecraft or rocket component falls back to Earth’s atmosphere every week. While most debris burns up, some fragments can survive long enough to pose a risk to aircraft. Studies suggest that by 2030, the chance of a commercial flight encountering falling space debris could rise to around 1 in 1,000.
Past incidents, including the uncontrolled re-entry of China’s Long March 5B rocket and recent airspace closures over Europe, have highlighted the growing challenge for aviation authorities. Closing too much airspace disrupts global travel, but failing to act could carry catastrophic consequences.
