Uganda is set to head to the polls on Thursday (January 15) in a high-stakes election that pits long-time President Yoweri Museveni against popular singer-turned-politician Bobi Wine. Museveni, who has held power since 1986, is seeking to extend his four-decade rule amidst growing international concern over democratic backsliding. The campaign trail has been defined by volatility; Bobi Wine, often seen wearing a bulletproof vest, has faced repeated detentions while his supporters have encountered tear gas and mass arrests by state security forces. With other major opposition figures such as Kizza Besigye sidelined by legal battles and imprisonment, Wine remains the primary challenger. He has warned of widespread protests if the vote is rigged, calling on the Ugandan people to “take charge” of their country’s future.
