Dalam laporan resminya, BMKG menyebut pusat gempa berada di laut, sekitar 287 kilometer barat laut Pulau Karatung, Sulawesi Utara, dengan kedalaman 56 kilometer.
Guncangan kuat terasa di beberapa wilayah seperti Manado, Tahuna, Bitung, Maluku Utara, hingga sebagian wilayah Papua Barat.
Analisis awal menunjukkan gempa ini berpotensi menimbulkan tsunami, terutama di kawasan pesisir Papua dan Sulawesi Utara.
Warga yang berada di dekat pantai segera dievakuasi menuju tempat yang lebih tinggi untuk menghindari kemungkinan datangnya gelombang tsunami.
BMKG juga menampilkan peta seismik yang memperlihatkan lokasi episentrum gempa di laut dalam dengan aktivitas tektonik tinggi di sekitar Laut Maluku.
Gempa ini dikategorikan sebagai gempa dangkal akibat subduksi Lempeng Laut Filipina yang menunjam ke bawah Lempeng Eurasia.
Hingga saat ini, BMKG masih memantau kenaikan muka air laut di sejumlah titik pantai di Sulawesi Utara dan Papua.
Belum ada laporan resmi mengenai korban jiwa atau kerusakan bangunan, namun sejumlah warga dilaporkan mengungsi ke daerah perbukitan.
Tim tanggap darurat dari BNPB dan BPBD telah disiagakan untuk memastikan jalur evakuasi warga berjalan aman dan tertib.
BMKG mengingatkan masyarakat agar tidak mudah percaya pada informasi tidak resmi yang beredar di media sosial.
Sebagai informasi, wilayah Sulawesi dan sekitarnya termasuk dalam zona cincin api yang sangat aktif secara seismik dan berpotensi menimbulkan gempa besar serta tsunami.
