The Event: On August 26, 2021, during the chaotic final days of the U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan and the mass evacuation of foreign nationals and Afghan allies, a suicide bomber affiliated with ISIS-K detonated an explosive device in the packed crowds gathered outside the gate. The Casualties: The attack killed 13 U.S. service members (11 Marines, one Navy corpsman, and one Army soldier) along with approximately 170 Afghan civilians. Dozens of others were severely injured.
