While wandering through the buzzing, vibrant energy of a local street markets in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, with Noochi Bua and my son, we stumbled upon an incredible, old-school hidden gem.Tucked right into the middle of the market hustle was an elderly local master performing remarkably intensely strong traditional street massages for anyone brave enough to sit down.
Not a single word of English was spoken, and my Mandarin vocabulary was strictly limited to a polite "thank you." Yet, without needing a single translation, universal body language, shared smiles, and pure mutual respect bridged the gap instantly. Somehow, everything was understood between us.
After enduring (and completely loving) every second of that crazy strong massage, Noochi managed to ask the master how much it cost entirely in Chinese. We were completely blown away to find out that this authentic, heavy-duty treatment from a true local expert was only 150 TWD—just $4.50 USD!
Moments like this are the exact reason I love traveling through Taiwan so much. It’s not just the incredible sights or sounds; it’s the unmatched humility, generosity, and genuine warmth of the Taiwanese people that turn a simple family walk into an unforgettable memory.
