NEON INFERNO - Full Game, No Damage (S-Rank)

Neon Inferno is the latest game from developer Zenovia, creators of the great action/platform game Steel Assault from 2021. Steel Assault was a melee focused action game, so this time, they've put more emphasis on shooting, taking inspiration from games like Metal Slug and Wild Guns. I can't think of any games off the top of my head that combine the side scrolling shooting and platforming of Metal Slug with the three dimensional shooting of Wild Guns, so it was a cool idea to blend both genres together, and it works very well.

Once again, Neon Inferno has the typical stage-based arcade structure, as well as an arcade mode, but I used "Replay Mode" to record this video. Replay Mode lets you play each stage individually, and even lets you start from multiple different points, so it's great if you want to practice specific areas. The lack of practice options is one complaint I had with Steel Assault, so I'm glad that was rectified here. The only gameplay difference between Replay Mode and Arcade Mode is that you always start with your default weapon when playing each stage in Replay, whereas in Arcade mode, you can use the money you earn from each stage to buy more powerful weapons, a shield, or health (which doesn't refill between stages, so it's important to make as few mistakes as possible). Learning how to deal with everything at your base level of power will be very helpful when going for an Arcade clear, and it'll make the shop items feel like a nice bonus, rather than something you'll need to rely on.

To get an S-rank, you really just have to finish the stage without getting hit. You also get a bonus for clearing the stage "quickly," which probably affects your grade, but the time limit is very lenient and it's never been a problem for me. I'm glad there's an incentive to play well, but it would be cool if there was an even more advanced scoring system on top of it, to add more depth to the moment-to-moment gameplay.

I don't really have any complaints, besides very tiny nitpicks here and there. Maybe it would be nice if there was a gameplay difference between the characters (they're identical), and a good scoring system would add more depth and longevity to the game, but those things aren't that big of a deal. Neon Infero is just a great game all around. The pixel art is phenomenal, the soundtrack is great, the game's a good length and has a nice level of challenge. I can't ask for much more than that!

Neon Inferno is available on PC, Switch, Xbox, and Playstation, at a regular price of $19.99, but there's a 20% launch discount that brings it down to $15.99 on Steam and the Nintendo eShop until December 3rd (I don't see the discount on Playstation or Xbox, but maybe you need the subscription service to get it?). The game's already well worth it at $20, so any discount just sweetens the deal!

Huge thank you to Retroware for sending me a key for review! They've been releasing a lot of interesting games lately, with Toxic Crusaders on the horizon!
