Nepal’s New PM is Anti-India?

Nepal has a new government that social media is presenting as a GenZ revolution. The PM is a rapper, the Home Minister was a DJ, and there's a 100-point reform agenda. But behind this PR campaign, a very different story is being buried.

Balen Shah had a Greater Nepal map in his office showing large chunks of Indian territory as part of Nepal. He tweeted abuse at Indians. He enforced customs duty on goods worth more than 63 rupees brought from India, without any warning. And now there's talk of blocking the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. All of this within one month.

This is not just a policy dispute between two neighbors. This is an ideology that Balen Shah has held for years. And when a man with that ideology becomes PM of a landlocked country that imports all its fuel from India, the people who suffer most when tensions escalate are ordinary Nepalis. It happened in 2015. It can happen again.

At the same time, people sitting in India busy praising this government are ignoring a bigger question. The government that came out of an anti-corruption protest had its Home Minister resign on corruption charges within 26 days. The same GenZ that built the movement is already getting their campus politics banned. The problem is deeper than it looks.
