Tensions between Turkey and Israel continue to grow as West Asia remains on edge. An official document by Turkish Defence Minister, sent to Parliament on August 10, mentions that Ankara is preparing for crisis and war. The white paper highlights rising regional tensions, Israel’s growing ties with Greece, and the recent defence deal under which Greece will receive Israel’s Iron Dome system, called the Achilles Shield. Turkey and Greece continue to spar over Northern Cyprus and the Aegean Sea. Meanwhile, the UK will train Turkish fighter pilots on the Eurofighter Typhoon. Turkey has ordered 20 jets, while Recep Tayyip Erdogan continues to push for F-35 jets from Donald Trump. Turkey has also signed a mutual defence pact with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, with some experts calling it the Islamic NATO. Is Turkey preparing for war?Meanwhile, the United States has unveiled new images of the Sentinel Intercontinental Ballistic Missile, which will replace the Minuteman III missiles in service since the 1970s. The Sentinel will carry the W87-1 thermonuclear warhead, with a yield of 475 kilotons—32 times more powerful than the “Little Boy” bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The W87-1 has been diamond-stamped, meaning it has met the quality standards needed for pre-development. The Sentinel will have a range of up to 9,000 kilometres, with the US eventually operating more than 600 missiles. As the missile race heats up between the US, Russia and China, the US Air Force is betting on the Sentinel for America’s nuclear deterrence.
